In chapter 9 we explore the admittedly complex topic of consciousness (see esp., p 196). Neuroscientist Peter Coppola recently published research suggesting that consciousness is not rooted in the neo-cortex, as commonly thought, but in the more ancient parts of the brain "including the brainstem and closely connected cerebellum." The Conversation described the research here: https://theconversation.com/major-theories-of-consciousness-may-have-been-focusing-on-the-wrong-part-of-the-brain-264609, and the research is here: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0149763425003343?via%3Dihub.
